Atlanta Botanical Garden's gun ban upheld by judge

ATLANTA -- A judge has ruled that the Atlanta Botanical

Truman's renovation of the White House, 17 May 1950

Renovation (also called remodeling) is th e process of improving a broken, damaged, or outdated structure. Renovations are typically either commercial or residential. Additionally, renovation can refer to making something new, or bringing something back to life and can apply in social contexts. For example, a community can be renovated if it is strengthened and revived.[1]

Process

The renovation process can usually be broken down into several processes:

Planning

Engineering

Structural repair

Rebuilding

Finishes

Technology has had a meaningful impact on the renovation process, increasing the significance and strength of the planning stage. The availability of free online design tools has improved visualization of the changes, at a fraction of the cost of hiring a professional interior designer. The decision regarding changes is also influenced by the purpose of renovation. In case of a fix and flip objective, an ROI (return on investment) can result from changes to fix a structural issue or design flow yield[2] or to use Best Home Improvement light and color to make rooms appear more spacious.

Reasons

Many people renovate homes to create a new appearance for their home, or so another person can live in the residence.[3] Builders often renovate homes because it is a stable source of income.[4]

Wood and renovations

Wood is versatile and flexible, making it the easiest construction material for renovations, and wood buildings can be redesigned to suit changing needs. Few homeowners or professional remodellers possess the skill and equipment that is required to alter steel-frame or concrete structures.

Forest certification verifies that wood products have been sourced from well-managed forests. Most certification programs provide online search options so that consumers can find certified products--the Certification Canada program includes a search option for all of the certification programs that are in use in Canada.[5]

In North America, most structures are demolished because of external forces such as zoning changes and rising land values. Additionally, buildings that cannot be modified to serve the functional needs of the occupants are subject to demolition. Very few buildin gs on the continent are demolished due to structural degradation.[6]

The Athena Institute surveyed 227 commercial and residential buildings that were demolished in St. Paul, Minnesota, between 2000 and mid-2003. Thirty percent of the buildings were less than 50 years old, and 6% were less than 25 years old. The four top reasons for demolition were "area redevelopment" (35%), "building's physical condition" (31%), "not suitable for anticipated use" (22%), and "fire damage" (7%). Lack of maintenance was cited as the specific problem for 54 of the 70 buildings where physical condition was given as the reason for demolition.[6]

Process

Most builders focus on building new homes, so renovating is typically a part-time activity for such tradespeople. The processes and services required for renovations are quite specific and, once plans are signed off, building a new home is relatively predictable. Renovations usually require all of the sub-trades that are needed for th e construction of http://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/topics/remodeling a new building. During renovation projects, flexibility is often required from renovation companies to respond to unexpected issues that arise. Projects involving renovation require not just flexibility, but a plan that had been agreed upon by multiple parties. The planning process will involve feedback from financial investors of the project, and from the designer. Part of planning will also entail the collection of data for the completion of the project and then the project plan will be revised and given consent before continuing with renovations.[7]

Effects

renovated Church, now condominiums, Watertown, Massachusetts

Renovation has several impacts, including:[8]

creating jobs

increasing spending

promoting gentrification

generating Tax revenue during both the construction and residential phases

Requirements

Requirements for renovation include property or site to reconstruct; structural plans; knowledge of sewage disposal, water supply, and flood zones; project plan; funding; and builders.

This $250 wifi sprinkler can cut lawn water use 30%

Rachio, a Denver-based start-up, has been selling a "smart sprinkler" for the last year. The device takes the place of a traditional control box on an automated home sprinkler system. It hooks the system up to the Internet -- meaning that you can control it from a smartphone.

It also means the sprinkler system can now check the weather. If it's going to rain or has rained recently, the system holds off on watering. It also automatically adjusts the watering times for each season. And it waters intermittently to allow for maximum absorption -- which also encourages the grass to grow deeper roots and become more drought-resistant. These things alone can cut lawn water use by 30%, according to the company -- no small amount when at least eight Western states are in extreme drought, or worse.

Related: Can these gates protect NYC from the next flood?

The company was formed after Chris K lein and Franz Garsombke -- two software engineers working for a real estate intelligence firm -- went through the last drought in Colorado in 2012. When fall came and the dryness subsided, the two noticed that sprinklers in the area were still https://www.pinterest.com/explore/arizona-landscaping/ running, even though it was raining.

"We figured there had to be a better way," said Klein.

So the pair started writing code and entered a contest run by the Colorado Innovation Network -- a consortium of businesses, governments and universities that promotes economic development in the state. They won $50,000, quit their jobs, and began building the company. Now they have 18 employees, and sales are on track to Sprinkler Installation quadruple from last year, although Klein would not disclose revenue numbers or units sold.

RachioThe hardware mounts in your home, the software is accessible online.

The device itself looks like a router, and Klein said most people can install it in 20 minutes. (If you still can't, most likely a gardener or electrician can.)

The entire thing -- plastic, electronics, packaging -- is made in Colorado. Klein said it would probably be cheaper to make it abroad, but the company is convinced that U.S. manufacturing costs will fall as more companies decide to build stuff here -- and they want to be part of the force driving that change.

It's compatible with Nest and other smart home systems, and many areas experiencing drought -- including Los Angeles, Fresno and the Santa Clara Valley -- subsidize the $250 retail price, said Klein.

Of course California is the most populous state seeing a historic drought, and Klein said roughly a third of Sprinkler System Installation his sales are in that state, up from about a quarter last year.

Rachio isn't the only company to make these devices -- competitors include Blossom and Skydrop.

Man starts free lawn mowing service: 'My way of making a difference is with a lawnmower'

Making a difference in one's community can take a variety of forms, even if Sprinkler Installation means simply mowing a elderly person's lawn for free.

That is the message of one Alabama man who has started a program for local youths to encourage them to give back. "My mission is to encourage kids to get out there and give back to their community," Rodney Smith Jr., 27, told ABC News. "I tell people all the time, if they are able, they can make a difference, and my way of making a difference is with a lawnmower."

The Bermuda native, who currently lives in Huntsville, Alabama, started the Raising Men Lawn Care Services last year, and since then the group has mowed around a thousand lawns, for free, for people in their community.

"We cut lawns for free for the elderly, disabled, veterans, and single moms," Smith said.

Smith said the idea originally came to him in 2015.

"I was driving from school and I saw an elderly man cutting grass a nd it looked like he was struggling," he said. "So I decided to help him."

The man's reaction affected Smith so deeply that he was inspired to continue his work throughout the summer of 2015.

The following year he decided to recruit some local youths to help, and the Raising Men Lawn Care Services was born.

Smith said he lost count of how many lawns they have mowed for free, but he estimated the number at more than 1,000.

Smith's group currently has 60 children participating in the Huntsville chapter, with another six chapters operating across the state. His goal is to have a chapter in all 50 states.

In addition to providing lawn services to those in need, Smith said that a big part of his mission is to "mentor young men, and even young girls, from ages seven to 17 about the importance of giving back to the community."

Raising Men Lawn Care Service mows lawns for free for elderly and disabled people as well as veterans and single moms.

This year, Smith launched the 50 Yard Challenge, which sets a goal for children worldwide to cut the grass on 50 lawns for free for people in their community who are elderly, disabled, veterans or single moms.

The Sprinkler Installation challenge rewards youths with colored t-shirts each time they reach the milestone 10, 20, 30, 40 and then finally 50 lawns. When a young person mows 50 lawns for free, they get a visit from Smith and the founding Raising Men Lawn Care Services team, as well as a brand new lawnmower to continue their work.

Smith said so far he has heard from dozens of children nationwide that are taking part in the challenge, and at least two children in England who are participating.

The organization never charges for lawn mowing services and operates on donations for gasoline and other expenses, according to Smith. In addition, the lawnmower engine makers http://www.popularmechanics.com/home/lawn-garden/how-to/a724/install-sprinkler-system-underground/ Briggs and Stratton contribute lawnmowers, weed eaters and other equipment to the group.

Smith said the response has been overwhelming from both the youth who participate in the program, and those who receive the free lawn services.

"For a lot of the elderly, they just can't believe it, they are so grateful," Smith said. "We have elderly people who just cry."

"The kids are so excited, they call and say 'save my spot this weekend, please?'" he said.

Irrigation sprinkler

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

impact sprinkler head in action

Irrigation sprinklers are sprinklers providing irrigation to agriculture, crops, vegetation, or for recreation, as a cooling system, or for the control of airborne dust, landscaping and golf courses. The sprinkler system irrigates the field and thus it is widely used in sandy areas as it checks the wastage of water through seepage and evaporation. Sprinkler irrigation is a method of applying irrig ation water which is similar to natural rainfall. Water is distributed through a system of pipes usually by pumping. It is then sprayed into the air through sprinklers so that it breaks up into small water drops which fall to the ground. The pump supply system, sprinklers and operating conditions must be designed to enable a uniform application of water.

Sprinklers that spray in a fixed pattern are generally called sprays or spray heads. Sprays are not usually designed to operate at pressures , due to misting problems that may develop.

Higher pressure Sprinkler System Installation Denton sprinklers that themselves mov e in a circle are driven by a ball drive, gear drive, or impact mechanism (impact sprinklers). These can be designed to rotate in a full or partial circle.

Rainguns are similar to impact sprinkler, except that they generally operate at very high pressures of 40 to 130lbf/in (275 to 900 kPa) and flows of 50 to 1200 US gal/min (3 to 76 L/s), usually with nozzle diameters in the range of 0.5 to 1.9inches (10 to 50mm). In addition to irrigation, guns are used for industrial applications such as dust suppression and logging.

Many irrigation sprinklers are buried in the ground along with their supporting plumbing, although above ground and moving sprinklers are also common. Most irrigation sprinklers operate through electric and hydraulic technology and are grouped together in zones that can be collectively turned on and off by actuating a solenoid-controlled valve.

Residential

An oscillating sprinkler is commonly used to water residential lawns, and is moved as needed.

Home lawn sprinklers vary widely in their size, cost, and complexity. They include impact sprinklers, oscillating sprinklers, drip sprinklers, and underground sprinkler systems. Small sprinklers are available at home and garden stores or hardware stores for small costs. These are often attached to an outdoor water faucet and are placed only temporarily. Other systems may be professionally installed permanently in the ground and are attached per manently to a home's plumbing system. An ingenious domestic sprinkler made by Nomad called a 'set-and-forget tractor sprinkler' was used in Australia in the 1950s. Water pressure ensured that the sprinkler slowly moved across a lawn.[1]

Permanently installed systems may often operate on timers or other automated processes. They are occasionally installed with retractable heads for aesthetic and practical reasons (making damage during lawn mowing or other maintenance less likely). These often are programmed to operate on a schedule and irrigate a piece of land in zones.[2]

Underground Sprinkler

Underground sprinklers function through means of basic electronic and hydraulic technology. This valve and all of the sprinklers that will be activated by this valve are known as a zone. Upon activation, the solenoid, which sits on top of the valve is magnetized lifting a small stainless steel plunger in its center. By doing this, the activated (or raised) plunger allows a ir to escape from the top of a rubber diaphragm located in the center of the valve. Water that has been charged and waiting on the bottom of this same diaphragm now has the higher pressure and lifts the diaphragm. This pressurized water is then allowed to escape down stream of the valve through a series of pipes, usually made of PVC (higher pressure commercial systems) or polyethylene pipe (for typically lower pressure residential systems). At the end of these pipes and flush to ground level (typically) are pre measured and spaced out sprinklers. These sprinklers can be fixed spray heads that have a set pattern and generally spray between 1.5-2m (7-15ft.), full rotating sprinklers that can spray a broken stream of water from 6-12m (20-40ft.), or small drip emitters that release a slow, steady drip of water on more delicate plants such as flowers and shrubs. use of indigenous materials also recommended.[3]

Agricultural Science

The first use of sprinklers by farmers was some form of home and golf course type sprinklers. These ad hoc systems, while doing the job of the buried pipes and fixed sprinkler heads, interfered with cultivation and were expensive to Sprinkler Installation Denton maintain. In the 1950s a firm based in Portland, Oregon Stout-Wyss Irrigation System, developed the rolling pipe type irrigation system for farms that has become the most popular type for farmers irrigating large fields. With this system large wheels attached to the large pipes with sprinkler heads move slowly across the field.[4]

Use

Most irrigation sprinklers are used as part of a sprinkler system, consisting of various plumbing parts, pump unit,[5] piping and control equipment. Outdoor sprinkler systems are sometimes used as a deterrent against homeless people. This sprinkler system was programmed to drench unsuspecting sleepers at random ti mes during the http://www.homedepot.com/b/Outdoors-Garden-Center-Landscaping/N-5yc1vZbx51 night. Local businessmen soon copied this system in an effort to drive homeless people away from public sidewalks adjacent to their businesses.[6]

Health risks from aerosols

In 2014, it was reported that use of common garden hoses in combination with spray nozzles may generate aerosols containing droplets smaller than 10 ?m, which can be inhaled by nearby people. Water stagnating in a hose between uses, especially when warmed by the sun, can host the growth and interaction of Legionella and free-living amoebae (FLA) as biofilms on the inner surface of the hose. Clinical cases of Legionnaires' disease or Pontiac fever have been found to be associated with inhalation of garden hose aerosols containing Legionella bacteria. The report provides measured microbial densities resulting from controlled hose conditions in order to quantify the human health risks. The densities of Legionella spp. identified in two types of hoses were found to be similar to those reported during legionellosis outbreaks from other causes. It is proposed that the risk could be mitigated by draining hoses after use.[7]

His only job - Painting the pinstripes on Rolls Royces

That's his job and his alone. A former village sign painter he now paints coach stripes, as they're properly called, on Rolls-Royce cars at the company's Goodwood, England factory. His job is the last step in the manufacturing process and if he messes up that line... He just can't mess up that line. There is no eraser that will fix it. The paint has special properties that instantly bond it to the underlying car paint.

That's serious pressure, so the proper mental state is important.

"This is just another car to me," he said. "If you start worrying about who owns them or where it's going, it'll play with your mind. Then you'll never do it. You just got to be able to learn to shut off and do what you need to do."

He rarely takes time off because it would cause him to lose his focus.

"Weekends are bad enough," he said, "because now I have to refocus and I have come back into it again."

When there's time off at the factory -- when the the plant's being retooled to build a new model, for instance -- Court usually travels to various parts of the world to paint customers' cars or to display his skills in public exhibitions.

Tall and burly with a thick, rolling accent, Court looks and sounds like just the sort of man who you could imagine painting English pub signs. That's what he used to do before he came here. He applied for the the Rolls-Royce job as soon as he heard the automaker would open a factory in his rural village in 2003.

"For me, it was just adapting a skill that I already had to a technique for doing six meters of car," he said.

Six meters is about 20 feet -- the length of a roughly $500,000 Rolls-Royce Phantom.

Photos - Cool cars from the Geneva Motor Show

A skill like Court's wasn't easy to find. He was flown to Germany to meet with Ian Cameron, the man BMW had hired to head up Rolls-Royce design. BMW had bought the Rolls brand a few years ea rlier. Cameron showed him a perfect hand-painted coach line.

"It was a case of 'Can you do that?'" Court recalled. "Well, I'm a cocky Englishman. I can do anything."

Rolls-Royce pinstriperFormer sign painter Mark Court now paints the coach stripes on Rolls-Royce http://www.artnet.com/artists/ cars at the automaker's Goodwood, England, factory.

From there, Court was sent to BMW's motorcycle factory, the only part of the company, at that time, that did hand-painted lines. He perfected his craft painting gas tanks and fairings, the shell that goes over the frame of some racing-style motorcycles.

Court uses squirrel hair brushes that he trims himself to just the right shape. He powders his fingers so they slide easily across the car's smooth painted surface as he follows a guide line made from tape. The tape doesn't mask the edge of the line, it's purely a guide from which he keeps a set distance.

His job involves much more than just straight lines, though. Customers also request a variety of custom designs including flowers, horse heads, various abstract shapes and, of course, their initials. He spent hours painting lines and flowers on Rolls-Royce's Serenity show car that was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show this year.

He's still trying to find an apprentice to someday take his place. So far two apprentices have dropped out. One was his own son, who decided to go to work in Rolls-Royce's wood shop, instead.

"Time marches on," Court said. "I ain't getting no younger. Someones got to continue."

The service is offered in partnership with Revolution Plastics, a

national leader in agricultural plastic recycling with operations in

Arkansas, Wisconsin and Texas, and now a new facility in California.

"Toro knows that drip irrigation is innovative technology that helps

farmers produce more with fewer resources, but also recognizes that at

the end of its lifecycle, drip irrigation becomes plastic that needs to

be recycled," says Phil Burkart, vice presid ent of Irrigation and

Lighting Businesses https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ox7DicTda0I at The Toro Company. "For this reason, we have

partnered with Revolution Plastics to offer superior, sustainable

recycling services to drip irrigators nationwide." Revolution Plastics

in Ballico, and a new location in Camarillo to better serve California's

coastal growers.

Jeff Dosio, from Modesto, California, and co-owner of Pacific

Agri-Lands, grows 12,000 acres of wine grapes, and has used the service

for over five years. "I've https://www.houzz.com/photos/landscape been pleased with the service - plus it's

free! Otherwise I'd have to pay to take my old vineyard hose or dripline

to the dump."

Dave Bricker of Victoria Island Farms of Holt, California, routinely

recycles drip tape from their 6,000 acres of asparagus, tomatoes and

other crops. "Toro referred me to Revolution Plastics when my other

recycler was full. They showed up the next day, exactly when they said

they would, and left the site neat and clean, which is very important to

us. I'm definitely calling Revolution Plastics next time."

In honor of the recycling service's growing presence, Toro is giving

away free product during its "Free Pallet of Drip Tape" promotion. To

state-of-the-art grapple hook trucks make field prep easy for the

farmer, and pickup turnaround time fast," says Inge Bisconer, technical

marketing and sales manager for Toro.

Toro's Drip Irrigation Recycling Service recently gained nationwide
